The Story Behind the Art

Exploring the physical spaces and objects that shape a person's life alongside their inner world forms the bedrock of my artistic practice. I love working out ways to combine still life and abstract art in a single painting, reinforcing the connection or disconnection between the physical space and objects and a person’s inner world.

I began my art journey in 2013 once my children were both settled into primary school. I attended classes here in Perth with Doug Craig for 3 years, once a week. I started to develop my style and have always been drawn to still life and my local environment. After years of painting at home and having taken online courses with two American artists, Melanie Morris and Duane Keyser, as well as two units from the Open University Fine Art Diploma (Curtin University) in Drawing and Painting, I have reached this point where I am ready to really start putting my art out into the world.

I am a member of both Trigg Art Club, Ellis House Arts Centre and North Coast Art Club, all here in Perth, WA.

Artist Statement

That awkward feeling when you just know you’re in the wrong place, even if everything looks perfect to everyone else. I love it when the title and the subject of my still life come together in one sweeping moment. This piece was a joy to paint, capturing that delicate balance between beauty, tension, and humour that life often presents.

Meet The Artist

I grew up in the very analogue 1970’s in Scotland in a massive home full of antiques, art and real fireplaces, a place that now feels like a figment of my imagination. Lots of rainy days, my 3 siblings, hours spent colouring in, playing in the garden, watching all the best tv of the era and pretty much clueless about the big bad world. It was a place of safety and cosiness and comfort. A place where the world did not seep in and daydreaming was a favourite pastime of mine. Daydreaming at the Friday night dinner table, getting lost in looking into the crystal glasses full of water, wine or whiskey at the mysterious colours and sparkles was enough to take me off into my imaginary world.
